Debate exists on the expected release of “Vazhakk” a Malayalam movie directed by Sanal Kumar Sasidharan & starring Tovino Thomas. The debate started due to the difference in the film’s release strategy & the resolution is brought about when Sanal Kumar chose to release a preview copy online.
Sanal Kumar thinks that Tovino Thomas, the co-producer too, is the one who is responsible for the delay of the release. Due to his worries about the commercial failure of the film. Although Sanal liked a theatrical release, Tovino was more into the OTT platform. Nevertheless, the streaming of a film was hindered due to the rights issues & Sanal’s reputation for not being the usual Hollywood filmmaker.
On May 14, Sanal posted the film’s preview on Vimeo, & he told the viewers with a caption that he gave a reason for the delay. This move triggered a debate: Some people admired Sanal’s decision to make audiences access his work while others lashed out at him for breaking copyright & stealing artist control.
Tovino Thomas denied Sanal’s allegations of holding him in custody, saying that he was prepared for release. During the Instagram live session, he spoke about the controversy along with the other co-producer.
